Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning will open at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival on May 14, 2025, and will hit United States theaters on May 23, 2025.
After the success of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, which raked in over $451 million globally and became Tom Cruise’s first movie to cross over ₹100 crore in India, the franchise remains a favorite among many fans.
The new film, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, has returning stars such as Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, and Angela Bassett. At 171 minutes and costing a production budget of $400 million, it is one of the most costly movies ever produced.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning takes up where its previous installment left off, with Ethan Hunt resuming his quest to prevent Gabriel from acquiring the AI program “the Entity.”
Production for the film was troubled, with delays due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, but filming resumed in March 2024 and wrapped in November 2024.
As expectation mounts for the film’s release, audiences can anticipate the continuation of high-octane action and complex storytelling for which the Mission: Impossible franchise has come to be recognized.
The most costly installment in the series, with a reported production budget of close to $400 million, is The Final Reckoning. Cruise, 62, still does all his stunts, such as a head-spinning motorcycle jump off a cliff. He attributes a “massive breakfast” to powering through these physically draining scenes.
Paramount Pictures is counting on The Final Reckoning to outperform the reception of its prequel, which grossed $571 million worldwide. The movie is set for a box office battle with Disney’s live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch, which is also coming in May.
Speculation is high that Cruise will also promote the film at the Cannes Film Festival, generating more buzz globally about its release.
